About the event
Located on the Usual and Accustomed lands of the Chehalis Tribe, the “Schism” timber sale threatens the "Howard's Rock" Legacy Forest. This forest is home to huge second growth douglas fir and western red cedar, and contains massive Douglas fir stumps up to 10 feet in diameter, a reminder of the rich, old-growth forest that once blanketed the region.
Please join LFDC and the Center for Responsible Forestry on Saturday, September 14th to visit the sale and raise awareness for our Legacy Forests.
Where: We'll meet at the North Slope Parking Lot off of Highway 8 on Cooper Rd SE. This parking lot is brand new so isn't on Google maps, you'll want to drive along Cooper Rd SE past the RV Park until you arrive at the parking lot. From there we will caravan down several miles of gravel roads to the timber sale.
When: 11:00am-2:00pm Saturday, September 14th, 2024
What: The hike will be approximately 1 mile round-trip, we will be walking on primitive trails across relatively even ground, off trail exploration of the timber sale is optional. We will be able to park right next to the forest.
Accessibility statement: Please be aware that this hike is off-trail and traverses terrain that may pose challenges to some individuals. The path is not paved and includes uneven surfaces and obstacles such as tree roots and logs. Participants should expect to encounter various natural features and may need to navigate through wet brush. Given the rugged nature of the terrain, we recommend that participants be in good physical condition and comfortable with hiking in potentially challenging conditions. Additionally, it is advisable to wear appropriate attire, including sturdy hiking footwear, long pants to prevent scratches, and waterproof boots to ensure comfort and safety throughout the hike.
