About the event

Located on the Usual and Accustomed lands of the Chehalis and Squaxin Tribe, Capitol State Forest is one of the most well known and frequented state forests in Washington. Just 41 acres of forests in Capitol State Forest are formally protected in forest reserves, and without intervention all legacy forests in Capitol State Forest will be logged in the next 15 years. On this hike we will visit one of these legacy forests, which is being targeted by the "Lizard Lounge" timber sale. We will also talk about the need for a science-based plan to conserve and restore Capitol State Forest. During the hike we will pass through the "Chameleon" timber sale which was auctioned off in 2020 and has since been logged. You will witness the direct impact of DNR's policies and see their logging practices firsthand.

Please join LFDC and the Center for Responsible Forestry on Saturday, September 7th to visit the sale and raise awareness for our legacy forests.

Where: We'll meet at the trailhead at the entrance of the Margaret McKenny Campground.

When: 12pm–3pm Saturday, September 7th, 2024

What: 5.3 miles round trip (about 2.6 each way with a lunch break in between), 700 ft total elevation gain, completely on a trail. Expect slight inclines and uneven rocky surfaces.

Accessibility Statement: While we strive to create an inclusive and accessible experience for all participants, we recognize that individual needs may vary. If you have specific accessibility concerns or require accommodations to participate in the hike, please contact us in advance so that we may assist you to the best of our ability.
